Secure Card Readers, Encrypting PIN Pads, and Fraud Countermeasures

This course provides in-depth technical training on the installation, diagnostics, and physical security measures associated with customer-facing input modules in automated cash systems. Technicians examine the electromechanical functions and transport mechanisms of motorized, dip, and contactless card readers, including magnetic stripe signal interpretation and smart card chip communication protocols. Students gain practical proficiency in handling tamper-responsive encrypting PIN pads, mastering symmetric key injection workflows, and verifying cryptographic module integrity without triggering zeroization states. The curriculum emphasizes proactive fraud mitigation, detailing external overlay detection, internal wiretap countermeasures, jamming transmitters, and structural physical defenses. Through realistic troubleshooting scenarios and workshop sessions, participants calibrate sensor thresholds, service degraded transport rollers, analyze input error codes, and audit terminal fascias for physical tampering. By the conclusion of the course, technicians will possess the rigorous field diagnostic capabilities required to ensure secure, uninterrupted transaction data capture.
